Corporate Data: Backups Can Never Be Too Much
Many believe that backing up to physical media is a relic of the last century. After all, today, we can count on cloud storage services. They're affordable and allow you to automatically backup and access them anytime, wherever you are. Plus, the cloud service provider ensures security while providing even more peace of mind. Right? Not so much. After all, a provider, like any other company, can be the victim of an attack.
Backup Attacks
This is exactly what happened recently when an American company called PerCSoft, which manages the DDS Safe backup service, was the victim of a ransomware attack. The service is used by hundreds of U.S. dental clinics, including to store patient files and backups, insurance documents, and other data without which a medical institution would be, say, "toothless."
The malware in question - known by three different names: Sodin, Sodinokibi and REvil - infiltrated the DDS Safe infrastructure and began encrypting the data. According to PerCSoft, the company did its best to promptly identify the threat. However, the ransomware was able to steal the data from several of its customers. The Wisconsin Dental Association claims that about 400 clinics have lost information vital to their businesses.
The attack disrupted the routine operations of some of these companies. Among the encrypted data were medical records, x-ray copies, and financial information-some companies said they were prevented from making payments to their employees.
The consequences of this incident could not be mitigated. Although the company's employees worked 24/7 to get around the situation, only two weeks after the attack they were able to circumvent the encryption of some clinics' data.
Keep your backups in one secure location- or even better, in multiple secure locations
This story clearly illustrates why cloud-based backups should not be the only security for corporate data protection. We suggest creating multiple backups of critical data using different types of storage.
To save time and effort in backing up, use a security solution that automates processes and protects your systems from ransomware programs and attacks.
