Criminals profit about $10 million in social engineering schemes involving cryptocurrencies
The phenomenon of cryptocurrencies and the growth of a enthusiastic public about the subject did not go unnoticed by cybercriminals.
According to experts at Kaspersky Lab, the evolution of cryptocurrencies not only attracts investors, but also cybercriminals who want to maximize their profits. During the first half of 2018, Kaspersky Lab's products blocked more than 100,000 activities related to cryptocurrencies on stock exchanges and other fake sources. Criminals are trying to engage more and more unsuspecting users in fraudulent schemes.
"These new fraud schemes are based on simple methods of social engineering, but stand out from common phishing attacks because they yield millions of dollars to criminals. Their success suggests that criminals know how to exploit the human factor, which is one of the weakest links in cybersecurity, in order to profit from the user behavior," says Nadezhda Demidova, chief web content analyst at Kaspersky Lab.
